swollen with the liquid of life

flood plain soaking in

chocolate water, the rain

keeps raining, drizzling, then pouring

down hard, wiper blades rowing, flapping

through sheets of water

fields swollen with the green

of spring, cottonwood, alder

dogwood & red willow line the banks

swollen as the clouds overhead

& green as the fisherman in waders

standing calf-deep in the mouth of the creek

imagining his high dollar gear will do

the trick this year, yield a trophy

rainbow swollen with the larva of spring

two bends upstream an eagle

perches in a snag leaning

over the river, waiting for something

to clear, my windshield a window

on the Montana landscape

antelope, coyote, raven, raccoon

sheep, cattle, buffalo & deer, horses

hay bales, riprap & fences, mountains & pastures of deer

white-tailed deer, all swollen with the liquid of life

bloating along the highway, warm

air breathes life of putrid death, a hawk

feeds with ravens on velvet liquid dried black

bellies swollen as ditches blossomed to streams

this Memorial Day, two inches of rain

green from Missoula to Medora

North Dakota badlands, rocky bluffs

swollen with the muddy blood of spring

rain feeding the river we all ride

teeming brown, flowing green & rising

roiling inside, rolling outside, wherever we drive

we’d like to think we’re driving

guiding, steering this truck, successfully

directing our day, seriously working

the brakes, but nothing stops

on this river we ride, nothing dies

sweetly we glide the green into our graying

spring like the deer, like the hawk

circling the river unclear &

swollen with the liquid of life
